DOJ gives Sirius/XM merger the green light

Posted by : RiseStar , Lounge0101 Administrator

The XM Radio/Sirius Radio mega-merger, proposed more than a year ago as cleared a major hurdle as the U.S. Department of Justice announced Monday that they have given the proposed merger the nod of approval.

The DOJ had been carefully scrutinizing the proposed merger, to ensure that it would offer benefits to consumers, rather than creating an abusive monopoly. Opponents of the merger, including other broadcasting entities and politicians had weighed in, claiming the merger would ultimately be harmful to consumers. However, in its decision, the DOJ determined that the merger was not anti-competitive, citing a multitude of alternatives available to the consumer, including conventional radio, Apple iTunes and iPods as well as cellular phone music services. Other factors, including low attrition rates showed that the two companies were not overly competitive with one another, with both focusing on attracting customers from conventional radio mediums, rather that from one ...

XM to Debut XM NavWeather Featuring Exclusive Threat Matrix Technology

Posted by : RiseStar , Lounge0101 Administrator

XM will debut XM NavWeather featuring exclusive Threat Matrix technology, the first real-time, personalized weather tracking service for GPS navigation, at the 2008 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), January 13-17, in Detroit. XM will also demonstrate in its infotainment vehicle a next-generation, rich, full-feature color touch-screen display, an electronic programming guide, stocks and sports tickers, dynamic information technology and more.

XM NavWeather enables drivers for the first time to view live, personalized weather forecasts and conditions on top of their existing navigation display. The exclusive "Threat Matrix" technology provides immediate alerts on developing weather conditions, such as hail, tornado and storm warnings, mapped to the driver's specific location and driving route. Drivers will have the option to view current and developing road weather conditions and multi-day forecasts for cities across the country, and also view weather maps to ...

XM-Sirius Merger Update

Posted by : RiseStar , Lounge0101 Administrator

Earlier this week Sirius Radio shareholders approved the $5 Billion deal to acquire XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. The proposed merger of the XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Radio companies would create a single national entity with over 15 million subscribers.

The merger is still before the U.S. Department of Justice and Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which both need to approve it in order for it to proceed. The regulatory hurdle is always by far the most difficult to overcome as many factors need to be weighed in as it would create a monopoly situation which could potentially be taken advantage of at the expense of consumers. A big part of the decision will hinge on whether or not XM and Sirius have made their case that the merger will strongly benefit consumers. Lower subscription costs, increased choice and flexibility are among those topping the list.

The FCC had previously ruled that the 2 satellite companies could not combine, howe ...

XM Canada anounces new channels

Posted by : RiseStar , Lounge0101 Administrator

XM Canada, the Canadian version of XM Satellite Radio announced new channels being added to their lineup, bringing the Canadian lineup to 120 channels. The new channels being added to the Canadian service are currently available on the U.S. version of the XM Radio service. Stringent CRTC regulations and terms of XM Canada's broadcasting license restrict the number of U.S. channels that can be offered on the Canadian service due to a required ratio of Canadian produced content to U.S. produced content.

The new channels now available on XM Canada are;

- Radio Disney - music and entertainment for children

- ESPN Radio - sports news and play-by-play coverage delivered with
energy and enthusiasm

- ESPNEWS - your source for up-to-the-minute coverage of everything in

XM Pulling Plug on Wireless FM in Cars

Posted by : RiseStar , Lounge0101 Administrator

[Courtesy Skyreport]

XM Satellite Radio is phasing out wireless FM modulation in car kits to a wired system allowing users to play back the company's programming through their existing car stereo systems. The move, XM said, is designed to alleviate the burden of having customers spend extra money on sometimes-expensive professional installers.

The transition enables XM to resume plug-and-play tuner production that had been exceeding FCC regulations limiting the output of wireless FM transmitters. According to reports, at least four XM tuners designed for the do-it-yourself crowd will be available at stores for the holiday shopping season (SKYFi13, XM Sportscaster, Delphi RoadyXT and Audiovox Xpress).

The company said that from now on the car kit and XM headphones will be included with all new plug-and-play tuners. ...

RIAA sues XM Radio over new recordable devices

Posted by : RiseStar , Lounge0101 Administrator

The RIAA has reared its ugly head again and its not just suing music pirates and swapping websites anymore. Now it is targeting manufacturers of consumer electronic devices capable of recording live content. Its latest victim: XM Satellite Radio.

The Record Industry Association of America (RIAA) has filed suit in New York over a new XM Radio device known as the Inno and the Helix. It is seeking a substantial sum of $150 000 per “violation”, or in RIAA terms, $150 000 for each song recorded to subscribers devices from the XM Radio service.

For those not familiar with the new XM Radio devices, they operate very much like a digital video recorder does, such as a Tivo, allowing people to record XM Radio content and songs and replay them at a later time. Cassette tape manufacturers also went through a similar round of lawsuits early on.

This battle is essentially a rehash of the early wars on VCR manufacturers, who were sued for producin ...
